There are many places to apply for a passport in New York City including application acceptance facilities, a regional passport agency and registered passport expediting couriers. The method you use to submit your application will depend on how quickly you need to get a passport.

Currently, there are more than 600 passport offices in New York state with a little less than 30 in New York City. Most passport offices require an appointment. Please call before visiting.

When applying at one of the application acceptance facilities, an authorized agent will review the passport form and supporting documents, administer an oath and witness the signing of the application. The completed form, supporting documents and payment for the application fee will be placed in an envelope and sealed. It should be addressed according to the processing time you choose. Routine processing is estimated to take up to 8 weeks. Expedited service takes up to 3 weeks.

COVID-19 UPDATE: Mailing delays are impacting passport processing. The Department of State's processing times begin when applications are received and not when you mail them. Standard service may take up to 14 weeks from the day the application is submitted to the day the passport arrives at your door. New York Passport Agency

The New York Passport Agency only serves customers who are traveling or submitting their passports for foreign visas within 14 days or 28 days, respectively. To apply at the processing center, you must schedule a visit by calling the automated appointment system.

During peak travel season, it can be time consuming to both set up an appointment as well as wait in line at the passport agency. You should plan to arrive early in order to pass through security before being directed to the agency. Arriving late could result in your appointment being canceled.
